Robert Marcus
Executive Vice President
Head of Capital Markets



As head of Capital Markets, Bob leads our Investment Banking, Debt and Equity Capital Raising, Tax Exempt/Municipal Finance and Fixed Income Sales and Trading businesses. 

He joined Fifth Third in 2009 from Credigy Corporation (National Bank of Canada), where he led US Asset Origination. His 30 years of experience comprise leadership positions in Loan Syndications at Wachovia; Debt Capital Markets Origination at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey; and the Mid Corporate Restaurant and Retail Group at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey. 

Bob earned a BA in economics from the University of Virginia, where he’s also been a guest lecturer, and an MBA from Emory University.


mark brown

Mark Brown
Managing Director
Head of Fixed Income

Mark leads the Fixed Income group for Fifth Third Securities (Sales & Trading, Public Finance and Strategy). 

Prior to joining Fifth Third, Mark headed the Southeast region for Union Bank and spent the majority of his career in senior positions at SunTrust across equity derivatives, foreign exchange and research and development. He co-founded the Stonemont Financial Group, which provided derivatives advisory services to corporate and institutional clients and later merged with Renova Partners. 

Mark has a BS in finance from the University of South Carolina and an MBA from Vanderbilt. He serves on the board of the American Bankers Association’s Security Association (ABASA).


mike ryan

Mike Ryan
Managing Director
Head of Equity Capital Markets

Mike joined Fifth Third in 2014 to launch the Equity Capital Markets platform and has expanded the ECM group’s value proposition to include equity trading and retail distribution as well as underwriting. The team has underwritten more than 75 transactions, raising over $60 billion in client proceeds. 

He previously held senior/leadership positions at Avondale Partners and J.P. Morgan’s Equity Capital Markets Group. With over 18 years of experience originating and executing equity and equity-linked capital markets transactions across a variety of industry verticals, he has worked extensively with both large cap and small cap issuers. His transaction experience ranges from $25 million to $5 billion.

Mike has a BS from the University of Dayton and an MBA from Vanderbilt.


jeff thieman

Jeffrey Thieman
Managing Director
Group Head Financial Sponsors Group

Jeff leads the Financial Sponsors Group and is responsible for a wide range of solutions for the middle market private equity community.

Since joining Fifth Third in 1999, he had a variety of roles that include credit/risk management, treasury management and distressed debt & restructuring. He was also previously led the Corporate Healthcare Banking group and healthcare sponsor leveraged finance business, including the bank’s healthcare sector vertical, distressed healthcare loan portfolio and sponsor leveraged finance.

Jeff earned a BSBA from Bowling Green State University.

Maria Yamat
Managing Director
Head of Bond Capital Markets

Maria joined Fifth Third in 2010 to lead Bond Capital Markets.  With over 18 years of experience originating and executing high-yield and investment-grade bond transactions across a wide range of industries, she has worked extensively with both mid cap and large cap issuers, raising debt capital ranging from $250 million to several billion dollars.     

Maria has held senior positions in the debt capital markets groups at Wells Fargo Securities, Banc One Capital Markets and Banc of America Securities.  

She holds a BBA from the University of Wisconsin and an MBA in finance and policy studies from the University of Chicago. 

bill tyson

William Tyson
Executive Vice President
Co-Head of Capital Markets

Bill joined Fifth Third as Co-Head of Capital Markets after 18 years with BB&T Capital Markets, including as senior managing director and co-head of Investment Banking. He also spent time at Scott & Stringfellow and as managing director at Wheat First Butcher Singer. Throughout his career, he has completed more than 125 capital financing and M&A advisory transactions. 

Bill graduated with a BS in finance and accounting from the University of Virginia and later completed the executive program at UVA’s Darden School of Business. 

Bill serves on multiple boards for the University of Virginia and is a guest lecturer on IPOs.


matthew cannan

Matthew Cannan
Managing Director
Head of Debt Capital Markets

Matt joined Fifth Third Bank, National Association in 2006 and is head of Debt Capital Markets Origination. He has over 19 years of banking experience, primarily in loan syndications and leveraged finance. 

Matt previously led the Loan Capital Markets team at Fifth Third, with responsibility for loan sales and trading, institutional loan investments and account coverage.  His experience also includes syndicated and leveraged finance at J.P. Morgan and other organizations, with a focus on the oil & gas industry. 

Matt earned a BS in finance from Indiana University.

Robert Schipper
Managing Director
Head of Investment Banking

Rob joined Fifth Third in 2010 and leads the Investment Banking Group.  With over 18 years in investment banking, advising publicly traded and privately owned companies, he has held senior positions at J.P. Morgan’s investment bank, Jeffries Robinson Humphrey and Bowles Hollowell Conner. 

Rob’s experience includes raising more than $15 billion in debt and equity financings and advising on over $3 billion in M&A volume across industry sectors, including diversified industrials, technology, consumer, restaurants and education. 

Rob has a BS in Finance and an MBA, both from the University of Virginia.

Robert Tull
Managing Director
Global Head of Financial Risk Solutions

As managing director & global head of the Financial Risk Solutions Group, Bob leads the trading and delivery of risk management products (interest rate, commodity and foreign exchange derivatives) to corporate and institutional clients throughout North America, Europe and Asia.  He joined Fifth Third in 2000. 

With over 25 years of capital markets/risk management, Bob contributes frequently to national financial media and is a member of the Market Participant Group, which focuses on a global code of FX standards, principles and best practices.  

Bob has a BA from the College of Wooster and an MBA from Baldwin-Wallace and was appointed to the Working Group on U.S. RMB Trading and Clearing.
