Curious about: Building business from the ground up
For some, data is simply a collection of ones and zeros. For others it's a doorway into an industry that seems to be forever evolving and growing. Niles Overly and Rob Kopp, Founders of Metro Data Center (MDC), are entrepreneurs who: "love to take a vision and turn it into something real." With of their latest start-up company, they've taken high-tier data centers to a new level.
As they explained: "Our clients need to be up and running, 24/7, 365. They need a primary place to put their equipment or a secondary disaster recovery or backup facility for their data. All in a highly secure environment." These needs require more than expertise - they require curiosity.
Niles' and Rob's curiosity led them to take an unconventional approach with MDC: "There are no other high-tier data centers that I'm aware of that have business incubators attached directly to them. We have two such incubators. One is the Tech Deck, a public-private partnership with the City of Dublin for technology companies. The other is the Dublin Entrepreneurial Center. In total, we have 90 different businesses that are co-located with us. We're all sharing company facilities, fiber, Internet, whatever the technology basis is that we need to do." This new approach is satisfying for both MDC and their clients.
As Niles says: "I love taking a business from the ground up and making it into something. We're a community of businesses. And we have sponsored programming to help them grow, handle legal affairs, handle financial affairs. This is my eleventh startup and the one I've enjoyed the most because it's pure technology plus mentorship of other young entrepreneurs."
Fifth Third Bank continues to be part of the company's evolution: "We have a line of credit and they've given us good advice on our payroll and business loan needs. There was about $12 million of infrastructure in place when we took it over. So these things aren't cheap. But it helps to put up the barrier to entry. As we put together more and more services it's going to require a lot of capital."BACK
